Safety First!

Many people visit Orlando each year and I would estimate 99% of Orlando’s visitors don’t give a second thought to personal safety. However, for those of us whom are residents in Florida, we watch the news and hear about local area crime.

Now please don’t think that Orlando is a crime infested city, it’s not. However, Orlando is indeed a city and we receive visitors from all walks of life from all over the world. That being said certain precautions should be taken by everyone who visits a strange city.

Here are some general tips that you should keep in mind when coming to Orlando, or anywhere for that matter!

®      Don’t wear flashy clothing or jewelry. Leave them home and only bring comfortable clothes. After all, you’ll be spending a lot of time walking around outside.

®      Make Photocopies of your Itinerary, Drivers License, Credit Cards, & Passport before you leave home. Leave them with a trusted friend or family member in case you lose yours. They can fax it to the appropriate authorities for easier replacement.

®      If you’re coming from a foreign country, you may wish to register with your countries Consulate or Embassy. Let them know you’re here and which hotel you’re staying in.

®      If possible, try not to carry bags with you during sightseeing days or park days. Take 2 Credit Cards and put one in each front pocket. Put your Driver’s License or other form of Photo Identification in another pocket. (Note: In the United States, almost all purchases over $10 on a credit card will require you to show a Photo ID that matches the name on the credit card.) Carry as little cash as possible. Everyone takes credit cards now. You’ll only need cash for tipping. Click here to see tipping customs in the United States.

®      Always stay on the “main road” when walking or driving. Do not take short cuts and avoid dim or dark streets, parking lots, or garages. Stay in a well lit area at all times after sundown.

®      If you’re renting a car, ALWAYS lock your door the moment you get into your car. Never park in an area unless it is well lit. When at a gas station, never leave your car running and lock your door.
